Brave Bear and his sore leg

September 17, 2019

Little Bear, the red Toy Poodle pup, presented to our Vets with a sore leg when he was 9 months old. He had been holding up his left hind leg when he walked and his fur-parents wanted to get to the bottom of it.

His hip was painful on examination, so the next step was to take some radiographs (x-rays) under general anaesthesia.

The radiographs showed that Bear had an abnormally formed left femoral head and that his femur was also shortened. This leg also had limited range of movement. All of these findings lead to the diagnosis of Legg-Calve-Perthes, a degenerative orthopaedic disorder affecting the femoral head.

This also explained why Bear got very uncomfortable when his fur-parents held him with his left side closest to them - his hip must have been sore.

Bear needed to have surgery to remove his damaged femoral head, so we got our mobile Specialist Surgeon, Dr. Sue Gibbons from Specialist Surgical Solutions on the case. Surgery was successful, Bear was very brave and he healed up well.

Bear required Physiotherapy after surgery to help build up his muscles on his little 3kg body and to encourage better movement of his leg. Take a look at one of his Hydrotherapy sessions from his Instagram page @bear_the_toy_poodle

Animals who have had femoral head excisions can function just fine with their “false hip joint”. The body truly is a wondrous thing.

If your pet is limping, it is best to get it checked out by a qualified Veterinarian. Phone us on 3208 9233 for an appointment.

Many thanks to Bear and his family for allowing us to share his story. Also thank you to Dr Sue Gibbons from Specialist Surgical Solutions for your amazing work and the VSS Physiotherapy Team for keeping our patients strong and mobile.
